With great sadness, we announce that our esteemed colleague and friend, [Mark Allen Waschak,](https://wimlaw.com/mark-a-waschak) departed this life on June 27, 2025. He was 61 years old.

Born in 1963 in Lorain, Ohio, Mark moved to Conyers with his family and attended Heritage High School in Rockdale County. An avid sportsman, he played AJGA golf and was recruited for the high school football team but found his true calling in science fair experiments. He received his Bachelor’s degree as well as a Master’s degree from Georgia Tech and served as a Safety Engineer and Compliance Officer for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and as a Site Representative for the U.S. Department of Energy, Fernald Field Office, where he oversaw all aspects of their environmental, safety and health program. He later served as Safety Director for a Fortune 500 company and worked with major workers’ compensation carriers.

Shifting direction only slightly, Mark entered law school and graduated in 1992 from Georgia State University College of Law, gaining admission to the State Bar of Georgia the same year. His engineering, government, and business experience meshed seamlessly with his legal career, rendering him an indispensable “one-stop shop” to clients because he could communicate with line supervisors, government inspectors, company safety directors, and lawyers from the solicitor’s office with equal ease and effectiveness. Following several years in private practice at his firm known as “OSHA Busters” in Conyers, Georgia, Mark joined Wimberly, Lawson Steckel Schneider & Stine as counsel in 1998.

In addition to his law practice, Mark was frequently recruited as a speaker by trade associations on topics ranging from OSHA compliance to loss control strategy. He was a guest lecturer at Georgia Tech and, with his colleagues Larry Stine and Betsy Dorminey, co-authored a treatise entitled Occupational Safety and Health Law, Compliance and Practice, published and updated annually by Thomson/Reuters and available electronically through the major legal research sites.

Always genuinely interested in his colleagues and their families, and ready with advice (for a yarn, or some colorful “war stories”), Mark enlivened every professional or social gathering. He infused everything he did with infectious energy and will be sorely missed at Wimberly Lawson. We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife, Mary; her children, Mary Catherine Schival and Sam Schival; his brothers, Michael Waschak and Marty Waschak (wife Lisa, children Amanda (James Kauffmann) and Lauren Brooke (Josh Sargent); his sister, Michelle (husband Cecil Wilhoit III); and his mother, Patricia Waschak. He was preceded in death by his father, Martin Waschak.
